More of God, less of me …
This is the cry of my heart today more than ever. It seems when there is more of me and less oh Him, I get into trouble. You know the kind of trouble I’m taking about, right? …The ‘open mouth insert foot’ kind of trouble. Or spontaneously responding before thinking and then just as quickly have to apologize for the very words that came spilling out of your mouth?
I have had a particular song running through my mind and thoughts for the last several days. It’s as if it’s on repeat on the tape that is playing in my mind. It’s a great Holy Spirit driven song, so it’s no wonder why it’s been a song my spirit longs for, and my soul desperately needs.
The song is called, “Set a Fire.” It is a simple Verse and a Chorus, but there is so much power in the words, few as there may be. At the most random moments throughout the week, I have found myself singing the words… I want more of you God. Then of course I begin sing the remainder of the song, but always coming back to, I want more of you God.
My heart is breaking over the things I see on the news and social media. I see people attacking people because of their political stances, their beliefs, or who they voted for. It seems like fear is setting the tone and the mood for the country. Please know, that I am preaching, as much to myself as I am to anyone. I am and have been guilty of thinking or doing some of these very things I am about to say.
I say, we need less of social media, less of the news, less of pointing fingers, and placing blame. We need to not be moved by fear, but rather stand in faith.
Maybe instead of pointing fingers and shouting accusations, we need to pray.
Maybe instead of screaming at one another, we need to love each other.
Maybe instead of looking at things in the natural, we ask God what He is up to and what He has to say.
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. Romans 13:1-2
Maybe instead of fearing what may happen, we trust God has a plan and He is big enough to handle whatever may come. Maybe instead of our wants and desires, we need more of His. After all His ways are not or ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9
Maybe instead of drawing lines in the sand, we need to come together in unity. Maybe we need Him to set a fire within all of us, to burn away the gunk and purify our hearts. Maybe instead of more news, more social media, more, more, more of anything, we just need More of God.
It’s in His presence that we experience peace amidst the storms and chaos swirling around us. It’s in His presence that fear flees and faith rises up. It’s in His presence that He speaks.
What this world needs is less of us and more of Him!
Lord, make Psalm 23 my prayer today and everyday.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
